System feature: Changes to completing ID checks
From September 2022, the Document Verification Service (DVS) is rolling out a change that will require the mandatory recording of a unique card number on all drivers’ licenses for ACT, NSW, NT, SA, TAS, and WA issued licenses. VIC and QLD are expected to mandate this requirement in 2023.
The change has been implemented to include the card number in the matching criteria, which ensures the document being presented is the most recently issued document, minimising the risk of identity theft or using a stolen/lost driver’s license.
The location of the card number field differs between jurisdictions, and can also differ depending on the issue date of the license.
When a new rail industry worker is requested to undertake an ID check, the system will provide them with guidance on where to find the licence number and card number. Please ask new cardholders to refer to How does a cardholder complete an ID check? for further guidance.
