Update to National Drilling Rig Operator Job Roles
Following thorough consultation with industry subject matter experts and in the interest of continuous improvement to the Rail Industry Worker Program, further clarification and changes have been made to the Drilling Rig Operator roles and their state-based licencing requirements.
From 30 November 2022, the following National roles will be retired:
Drilling Rig Operator – Air – National
Drilling Rig Operator – Auger – National
Drilling Rig Operator – Core – National
Drilling Rig Operator – Rotary Mud – National
Drilling Rig Operator – Cable Tool – National
Drilling Rig Operator – Sonic Drilling – National
A new matrix for state-based drilling roles has been developed to replace these roles by grouping the relevant state drilling licences applicable to each Drilling Rig Operator Role. You can find these on page 3 of the National Plant Matrix.
These roles are now available for awarding to cardholders in the RIW System, depending on the type of rig operated.
State-based.Drilling Rig Operator – Air – National (based on existing role)
State-based.Drilling Rig Operator – Auger – National (based on existing role)
State-based.Drilling Rig Operator – Cable Tool – National (based on existing role)
State-based.Drilling Rig Operator – Core – National (based on existing role)
State-based.Drilling Rig Operator – Rotary Mud – National (based on existing role)
State-based.Drilling Rig Operator – Sonic Drilling – National (new role)
These new roles require two mandatory competencies:
A state-based licence comprising at least one of the types of drilling to be performed.
STATE Class 1.4A Cable Tool
STATE Class 1.4B Auger
STATE Class 1.4C Rotary Air
STATE Class 1.4D Rotary Mud
STATE Class 1.4E Sonic
STATE Class 2.4A Cable Tool
STATE Class 2.4B Auger
STATE Class 2.4C Rotary Air
STATE Class 2.4D Rotary Mud
STATE Class 2.4E Sonic
