RIW Go-Live 28 June 2019

The Rail Industry Worker Program (RIW) provides a national competency framework for rail workers across Australia. The RIW Program is owned the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and will transition from current service provider Pegasus to new service provider Metro Trains Australia from 28 June 2019. The transition is the result of a full tender process conducted by the ARA. The change will deliver key outcomes that will benefit workers & industry:

  • Strong focus on data protection, privacy and security
  • Smart device enabled system
  • Light reliance on hardware, cards read from smartphone
  • No ‘pre-association’ required; associate by scanning card
  • Competencies and medicals uploaded by approved assessing bodies
  • Virtual smartcards that can be issued immediately
  • Online ID checks – no need to visit Australia Post
  • Less time off tools
  • Improved fatigue management across the industry
  • Service desk available 24x7x365 to all RIW participants

A new system will be launched and new smartcards will be issued. Rail workers must use the new RIW card when carrying out work for these networks from 28 June 2019:
