Rail Industry Worker – Update to Permission Access Agreement and Privacy Policy

The Rail Industry Worker Program (RIW) provides a national competency framework for rail workers across Australia. The program is owned by the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and powered by new service provider Metro Trains Australia (MTA). The new RIW system went live on 28 June 2019, and all work carried out on participating rail networks will now be managed through the new RIW system and cards.


Your participation in the RIW program is governed by the Permission Access Agreement (PAA), which has recently been updated. Please read the PAA carefully – it contains important details about how the RIW program works, including how information about you may be collected, used, disclosed and destructed for the purposes of the RIW program, as well as your responsibilities as a participant in the RIW program.  We have also recently updated MTA’s Privacy Policy for the RIW program (RIW Privacy Policy).

By using your RIW card you will be deemed to have agreed to the PAA, and to the collection, use, disclosure and destruction of your personal information for the RIW program as described above, and otherwise in accordance with the RIW Privacy Policy. You will also be prompted to confirm your agreement to the PAA and the RIW Privacy Policy when you register your RIW card on the myRIW system. If you fail to use or register your RIW card by 31 March 2020 then your card may be suspended or blocked. Your RIW card may also be suspended or blocked if you fail to comply with the PAA or any other policies or procedures that apply to your participation in the RIW program.

What is myRIW?

myRIW allows you to view and manage your RIW profile on the web.  In myRIW you can view your employers, associations, job roles, competencies and medical results. You can also update your personal details or ask your employer to make corrections to your profile. You can use myRIW to accept employment or association requests, and also provide your consent to the Permission Access Agreement.

If you are a newly created worker in the RIW system, you will receive an email invitation to create a myRIW profile by accepting an employment request. If your profile was migrated from the previous system, you can create a new myRIW profile at any time. We have developed a short video and Quick Guide – myRIW to help you.
